National Register of Historic Places. San Jose was the fourteenth mission, founded June 11, 1797 by Fr. Lasuén. The convento has the only daub and wattle wall construction fragment left in a California Mission. An earthquake destroyed the mission church in 1868. From 1982-1985 the church was reconstructed using traditional building methods. The convento wing is original and houses the museum and collections. The California Missions Foundation financed an earthquake retrofit of the convento in 2001-2002.

Immediate and Long-Term Funding Needs:

  • Install security systems to protect mission artifacts and paintings
  • Reconstruct a building connecting church to convento wing.
