National Historic Landmark. Significant as the site of the 1824 Chumash revolt, the most extensive and successful Indian revolt in California history. Santa Ines was the nineteenth mission-founded September 17, 1804 by Fr. Esteban Tápis. The church and convento wing are original structures dating from 1804-1817. Major restoration efforts in 1947-1954 resulted in a rebuilt bell tower, partial restoration of the convento, and structural stabilization of the church.
